There are two main types of abortion:
Medication abortion (also called the abortion pill) can be taken up to 70 days (10 weeks pregnant). The pill (two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol) is taken in two doses, one typically at a doctor’s office and the other at home.
There are several types of surgical abortions. Suction aspiration, also called suction curettage, or vacuum aspiration abortion, is performed during the first 6 to 16 weeks gestation. Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is another type of procedure typically done in later weeks. Both types have risks and side-effects and greatly vary depending on your gestation and health.
If you are considering abortion, your first step is a pre-abortion assessment. We never financially benefit from your decision and can discuss your options with absolutely no pressure. All services are free and confidential.
THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF ABORTION
Women report a range of emotions after an abortion. This can include:
- Thoughts of Suicide
- Feelings of Grief
- Lowered Self-Esteem
- Sexual Dysfunction
- Avoidance of Emotional Attachment
- Substance Abuse
For some women, these emotions may appear immediately after an abortion or gradually over a longer period of time.
Counseling or support before you make a decision to have an abortion is very important. If family help and support are not available to you, talking with a spiritual or professional counselor before having an abortion can help you better understand your decision. At WISH Medical, our advocates are available to listen and talk with you.
Remember, it is a woman’s right to be fully informed by her doctor prior to any procedure. A woman should be encouraged to ask questions.
